Tim Pohlmann is Managing Director, U.S. and Advisor for SEP Analytics Strategy at LexisNexis Intellectual Property Solutions. He oversees the company’s U.S. commercial organization, including sales, customer success, and marketing, and is responsible for shaping the overall U.S. market strategy. In his advisory role on standard essential patents (SEPs), he defines the global strategy for LexisNexis’ SEP analytics offerings, helping to advance data-driven approaches to licensing, valuation, and policy discussions. He is also a Venture Partner at ECAPITAL, where he supports deal flow analysis and investment decisions with a focus on data-centric AI startups. Tim is the founder of IPlytics, a leading data platform for standards and SEP intelligence. He served as CEO for over a decade before the company was acquired by LexisNexis in 2022. Under his leadership, IPlytics became the first platform to integrate SEP declarations, patent pool data, undeclared patent mapping, technical standards contributions, and ownership intelligence into a unified analytical system, significantly improving transparency in the global SEP ecosystem. His work in SEP analytics began during his doctoral research in 2009. In 2012, he received his PhD with highest distinction from the Berlin Institute of Technology, where his dissertation focused on patenting behavior and coordination mechanisms in technical standardization. He later worked as a post-doctoral researcher and consultant with the Law and Economics of Patents group at CERNA, MINES ParisTech. Tim is a frequent speaker and moderator at major international conferences on SEPs, FRAND licensing, and patent pools, including the Global Standards Leadership Conference (GSLC), which he founded, as well as events hosted by the Licensing Executives Society (LES). He also contributes to IPBC conferences and industry briefings. His insights are regularly cited in leading international media such as the Financial Times, Wall Street Journal, Bloomberg, Reuters, IAM, and Managing IP. He has been recognized in IAM’s Strategy 300: The World’s Leading IP Strategists and has authored numerous peer-reviewed publications and industry reports. He also serves as an adjunct lecturer on patent strategy and standards economics.
